This book would have been impossible without the hundreds of abuse
survivors who sought help. You will read about them in real-life stories,
sufficiently altered to protect their identity.
Many people have influenced my life and ministry. I think of Paul Davis,
an outstandingly effective veteran missionary with the Christian Missionary
Alliance in Ubon province in Thailand. A son of a very gifted
missionary pioneer in China himself, Paul helped me to understand other
cultures. He was very affirming when I sought new ways to share the gospel.
Paul Hiebert, professor in missiology in Fuller Theological Seminary,
challenged me to think deeper and harder and left a lasting impression,
long after his memorable lectures were past. Also in Fuller I met John
Wimber, whose example of frankness, laughter, creativity, and humility
gave a whole new perspective to the practice of pastoral ministry. His insight
helped me to focus on the expectation of a manifestation of the presence
of Jesus.
Wil and I have again and again been encouraged by Sally and Floyd Mc Clung Jr.
who, when they served with Youth With A Mission in the Netherlands,
contributed vital impulses for our personal life and ministry over
a prolonged period.
To the many who have kept urging me to sit down and write, my sincere
thanks, even though I have often groaned, wondering why I agreed
to it in the first place.
Above all, my warmest appreciation to my life companion, Wil, who
has spurred me on to move beyond the practical issues of ministry and to
keep looking for more insights and growth. Her faith helped me to enter
graduate and post-graduate studies as a late starter – and took the consequences,
mostly with a smile.
We have been blessed in the Netherlands with many books in English.
The bibliography will show my own debt to English language authors. I
am grateful for the opportunity to share some of what I digested in my
studies and return it. From Shame to Peace was originally written for use
in Denmark, and because of translation needs, directly written in English.
It took several dedicated people to get it in the final form as we have it
now, among them Linda Smit and Cheryl Gagliasso. To Jane Collins, thank you for
the courage to work on my ‘Dutch accent’ and make this manuscript ready for
publication.
